What is a caravan motor mover and how does it work?

A motor mover sits underneath your caravan, close to the wheels. When you’re ready to manoeuvre, rollers press against your tyres — either by hand (manual engage) or at the push of a button (auto engage) — and small electric motors then drive those wheels forward, backward, or to one side, controlled via a wireless handset.

Power comes from your caravan’s existing 12V leisure battery, so there’s nothing extra to plug in or charge separately. Most movers offer variable speed control, so you can creep the caravan into position mm by mm — far more precise than trying to judge it from the driver’s seat of your tow car.

Once you’re happy with the caravan’s position, you disengage the rollers (again, by hand or automatically depending on your model) and the mover sits quietly out of the way until next time.

Do you really need one, or can you just push the caravan?

If your caravan is light, your driveway is flat and firm, and you’re always able-bodied enough to push and steer at the same time, you might manage without one — for a while.

Once you’ve decided a mover makes sense, there are two main choices to make.

Axle type. Single-axle caravans (one pair of wheels) take a single-axle mover. Twin-axle caravans (two pairs of wheels) can either have one axle driven (the Evolution Twin) or all four wheels driven (the Evolution All-Wheel-Drive), depending on weight and the kind of pitches you typically use.

Engagement type. Manual engage means winding the rollers onto your tyres by hand before use, using the supplied tool. Auto engage does this electronically at the press of a button. Both drive identically once engaged — it’s purely a question of convenience versus cost.
