What should you check after each trip?

A quick check after a trip can prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems.

• Make sure the rollers are fully disengaged. The rollers should not remain pressed against the tyres when the mover is not in use. A useful reminder from Powrtouch’s useful tips is to place the engagement wrench on the driver’s seat while the rollers are engaged. You will see it before setting off.
• Look at the visible cables. Check that nothing has come loose, become damaged or started rubbing against the chassis.
• Remove mud, grit and road salt. This is especially important after a wet journey, a muddy pitch or a coastal trip.
• Check for trapped stones or debris. Clear anything that could obstruct the roller or sliding mechanism.

How should you clean a motor mover?

Use clean water from a hose at normal pressure. If necessary, use a firm brush to clean dirt from the rollers.

Do not use a pressure washer. High-pressure water can get past seals and damage the motors, control box or electrical connections.

After rinsing, allow the mover to drain and dry fully.

What needs greasing, and how often?

The sliding mechanism moves the rollers towards and away from the tyres. Powrtouch recommends greasing this mechanism at least every six months.

Use a silicone-based spray grease or motorcycle chain grease. Clean away old grease and grit before applying a fresh coating. Do not apply grease to the roller surface or the tyres.

An easy way to remember is to grease the mechanism twice a year:

• At the end of the touring season
• Before your first main trip in spring

If a manual-engage mover becomes stiff to operate, dirt or a lack of grease may be the cause. Clean and grease the mechanism first. If it remains stiff, do not force it. Ask a Powrtouch dealer or engineer to inspect it.

What should you check during the touring season?

Inspect these areas several times during the season:

• Rollers. Check that they are clean and free from obvious damage or heavy wear.
• Brackets and fixings. Look for movement, damage or distortion. If anything appears loose or out of position, ask an approved dealer to check it.
• Corrosion. Light surface corrosion can develop over time. Heavier corrosion around the mountings, motor housings or cable ends needs closer attention.
• Cables and terminals. Look for damaged insulation, rubbing, loose connections or corrosion.
• Control box. Make sure it is secure, dry and has space around it for ventilation. Do not cover it with clothes or stored items.
• Handset. Check that the battery is working and that the handset responds correctly.

Why is the leisure battery so important?

The motor mover runs from the caravan’s leisure battery. Moving a loaded caravan requires a large amount of power, so a battery may operate the lights and water pump but still struggle when the mover starts.

If the mover is slow, cuts out under load or does not respond, check the leisure battery before assuming the mover is faulty. Make sure it is fully charged, in good condition and connected securely.

When should you contact a dealer?

• A bracket has moved, bent or become damaged.
• The caravan pulls to one side after you have checked that the rollers are engaged correctly.
