Single Axle, Twin Axle or All-Wheel-Drive? How to Choose the Right Powrtouch Mover

How many axles does your caravan have, and why does it matter?

Take a look underneath your caravan, or simply count the wheels on one side. One wheel means a single axle; two wheels, one in front of the other, means a twin axle. It’s the first thing to establish, because it determines which family of movers will fit and work properly.

A single-axle caravan only needs its one pair of wheels driven, so a single-axle mover — the Freedom or Evolution Single Axle — does the whole job. A twin-axle caravan has two pairs of wheels, and here you have a choice: drive just one axle with two motors (the Evolution Twin), or drive both axles – all four wheels – with the Evolution All-Wheel-Drive (four motors).

Axle count and weight tend to go hand in hand, but not always — some smaller twin-axle vans and trailer tents weigh less than you’d expect, so it’s worth checking your caravan’s MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass) on its VIN plate before deciding. Powrtouch Freedom vs Evolution: what’s the real difference?

The Freedom is Powrtouch’s entry-level mover. Under ideal conditions it’s rated to move a 1,500kg caravan up a 1-in-4 slope, and comfortably handles well over 2,000kg on level ground — plenty for the majority of single-axle caravans on the road. Its slimline gearbox is designed to clear shock absorbers, and like the rest of the range, fitting doesn’t require any welding or drilling into the chassis.

The Evolution Single Axle is the more powerful option, available in variants suited to caravans up to around 1,500kg or up to around 2,000kg. Manual engage vs auto engage — which is easier to live with?

Every Powrtouch mover needs its rollers brought into contact with your tyres before it can drive them, and taken away again afterwards. How that happens is the difference between manual and automatic engagement, and it’s available across most of the range — so it’s really a separate decision from single vs twin vs AWD.

With manual engage, you use the supplied wrench to wind the rollers onto the tyres before use, and wind them off again afterwards. It’s a simple, purely mechanical system with nothing extra to go wrong. (One habit worth adopting either way, from our useful tips: put the socket wrench on the driver’s seat when you engage the rollers, so you can’t drive off without disengaging them.)

With auto engage, the rollers extend and retract electronically at the press of a button on the handset. There’s no winding involved at all — just press, wait a moment, and you’re ready to go.

Once engaged, both versions drive identically, with the same variable speed control for precise, mm-by-mm manoeuvring. The choice is really about convenience versus cost: auto engage is particularly popular with owners for whom winding rollers by hand is awkward or uncomfortable, while manual engage delivers the same performance at a lower price point.

When do you need an All-Wheel-Drive (4-motor) mover?

The Evolution All-Wheel-Drive is Powrtouch’s flagship: a twin-axle mover that drives all four wheels, rated to handle up to 3,500kg on the flat. That’s roughly double the capability of the Evolution Twin (2-motor), which is built for twin-axle vans up to around 1,800kg, even on a slight slope.

Weight is one reason to choose AWD — if your twin-axle caravan is towards the heavier end of the scale, four driven wheels give you the power to match. But weight isn’t the only reason. AWD also makes a real difference on the kind of pitches that give 2-wheel-drive movers a hard time: soft grass, gravel, and anything with a slope to it. With traction on all four wheels, AWD copes far better when one or two wheels would otherwise be scrabbling for grip.
